Karson’s Brave New Walk
Among the numerous homecoming and alumni celebrations, the Darlington community also celebrated the return to campus of senior Karson Swiger for the first time since August 30.
Swiger was involved in a boating accident on August 31 that left him with a severe leg injury.
So far, Swiger has had 12 surgeries and has another one on Oct 8. He spent 25 days in the hospital, but has been able to spend some time at home following the covering of his wounds.
“The love and support that I received in the hospital felt extremely powerful. I experienced what it’s like to have an entire community behind me. It gave me strength and motivation to never lose hope,” Swiger said.
Swiger was selected by his peers to represent the senior class on Homecoming Court on Friday, Oct 4, where he was elected Homecoming King. He received a standing ovation from the crowd, among many hugs and well-wishes.
“It felt great to finally walk again, but more importantly it showed me that I am truly blessed to be loved by so many,” Swiger said.
The Swiger family has experienced an outpouring of support through meals, visits, cards, gifts, and prayers among many others.
“We are most thankful for the continuous prayers. Our family would like the community to know how grateful we are for their kindness and presence,” Swiger said.
The Swiger family posts regular updates about Swiger’s journey on CaringBridge.
