In the April 13 and 14 runoff for 2016-2017 Student Body President, junior Carson Barnes defeated opponent Herren Burgess to win the presidency.

In a decisive victory, Barnes garnered 62.7 percent of the vote and about 165 votes compared to Burgess’ 37.3 percent and about 98 votes. With 335 eligible voters, which included ninth, tenth and eleventh grades, 263 voted, bringing the turnout to 78.5 percent. Participation in the runoff increased by nine percentage points compared to the 69.5-percent turnout in the general election on April 11 and 12.

In the general election on April 11 and 12, Burgess originally won a plurality of the vote with 39.5 percent and about 92 votes. However, Burgess fell one half of one percentage point short of avoiding a runoff. Barnes, who placed second with 31.3 percent of the vote and about 73 votes, advanced to the runoff to successfully challenge Burgess for the presidency.
