On November 3 in the Dodd Banquet Room, Wyatt Wood signed his letter of intent to play lacrosse at Averett University. Wyatt chose Averett University to continue his lacrosse career at the next level while pursuing a major in aviation. Wyatt and his teammates joined him in this celebration of this new chapter in his life. Wood’s signing marks an exciting start to the season, celebrating both his athletic talent and his ambitious academic goals.
“I’ve known Wyatt since seventh grade, and I think it’s pretty cool that he’s going to pursue his dream of playing lacrosse in Division three,” senior Brysen Jones said. I think it’s a good fit for him since he wants to pursue aviation, and it’s just the school for that. I’m happy that he’s going to play lacrosse there, and he worked really hard for it.”
Many of Wood’s teammates share the same admiration for his dedication and talent, recognizing both his athletic skill and his character on and off the field.
“I’ve been friends with Wyatt since the fifth grade, and we met in a summer ball league. He’s truly a big impact on our team. You can always count on him when we need a goal, and he’s ready to score. There is something so special about seeing your friends follow their dreams,” senior Crawford Pettit said.
Wood’s impact extends beyond just his teammates; his coaches have also witnessed his growth and dedication over the years. Those who have guided him since middle school have seen his determination turn potential into a real opportunity.
“I started coaching Wyatt when he was in sixth grade, and I coached him both in football and lacrosse,” Head lacrosse coach Brendan Leezer said. “He played defense, but he actually struggled with the ability to move from where we needed him. With time, it turns out he’s actually pretty quick and could go D3. Anything you ask him to do, he’s going to do it, and he takes in whatever you give him, and he works on it. Averett is a really good flight school and also happens to have lacrosse, so he gets exactly what he wants, which is to be a pilot like his father. It’s perfect for him, and I couldn’t be more proud.”
After years of guidance from his coaches and support from his teammates, Wood’s hard work has led him to this milestone moment. Reflecting on his journey, he shared how his passion for lacrosse and his dream of becoming a pilot came together in his decision to attend Averett University.
“I started playing in sixth grade, so for seven years I’ve been playing,” Wood said. “One of my friends said they were playing, so I decided to come out, and I liked it.”…”I play attack, and I’m more of a creased guy, so I stay more towards the goal. I started in middle school, so way later than all my friends, so they helped me learn how to cradle, pass, and shoot.”…”I chose Averett University because they have the major I’ve been wanting to do, aviation, and play lacrosse on the next level.”
