The golf Region Championship took place on Monday, April 21. The golf team competed at the 4.4 out of five star Coosa Country Club golf course here in Rome. The golf team took home the first place prize after winning it last year as well. Both the boys and girls teams consist of dorm and day students. This creates a diverse and connected community and atmosphere. Golfers sophomore Annika Kuo and junior Jasper Stepp competed in the championship on Monday. Kuo has been playing golf for over 2 years and this is what she says about what golf means to her.
“To me, golf is a sport that is super chill and one that you get to spend time with your friends in the sun,” Kuo said. “I think it is great for all this to be incorporated into a sport that I enjoy.”
Stepp, who is a day student, elaborates on how the team clenched the championship and what his reaction was to them winning.
“We won and I was very happy with it,” Stepp said. “Blair Moseley [senior] sunk a 20 foot putt on the last hole to win it all so we did not have to go to the playoffs. That was really nice and I am super proud of the team.”
The girls golf team constantly inspire each other. They cheer each other on and have very positive energy.
“My teammates always bring very positive energy and always have a great attitude,” Kuo said. “When they are done golfing, they come to walk the course with me and that really supports me.”
Stepp explains what it was like for the team to be competing on their home turf. The team practices at Coosa on a daily basis, so much so they know the ins and outs of the course.
“Having the home turf advantage at Coosa was great. We all knew how to play the course,” Stepp said. “The week before at the invitational we lost because we were used to playing different tees. We grinded and grinded all week leading up to the region championship and that is pretty much how we won.”
There are many aspects and parts to making the golf team truly feel like a team, including practicing together.
“We would practice together and go to Coosa and play around the course together,” Kuo said. “This helps for the golfers to bond and truly become a team.”
The golf team has a distinct feeling of a true team and a tight tiger family community.
“It is truly like a family, we all have each other’s backs,” Stepp said. “When we see each other on the course we ask each other how we are doing, and if we are not doing good we share some encouraging words and that is really nice.“
