The air was thick with autumn spirit and flying pumpkins as the annual Pumpkin Chunkin’ contest blasted off on the chapel lawn. Students from each house competed in a fun and interactive way to join each house together with a little competition. Each with many different strategies, but all with one goal, to launch their pumpkin the furthest.
“When I was trying to throw the pumpkin, I deliberated first with my head of house, Coach Becks. She encouraged me to throw the pumpkin more like a football or a soccer goalie throwing the ball, so I threw the pumpkin more like a football off my shoulder,” senior Savvy Palmer said.
Palmer, the house representative from the girls’ dorm, Cooper, launched her pumpkin the furthest out of all the other girl representatives from each house, securing the win for team Cooper.
“I think the purpose of the event was to bring houses and students together so that everyone could become more involved, also to take a break from regular day-to-day stressful life for a little bit of fun,” freshman Kate Willerson said.

From freshmen to seniors, this event welcomed all to come and support their houses with fierce competition. This is just one event that would help everyone prepare for a big event, RUMPUS.
“I think the purpose of the event is to gather the student body to watch a funny event, and this really helps get more students involved with their houses, which overall contributes later on to more involvement with bigger events such as Rumpus,” Palmer said.
When it came to choosing the best representatives who would chunk their pumpkin the furthest, each had different ideas and opinions.
“Our strategy was to pick the two strongest people from our house, Moser, because our goal was to win and throw it the furthest, so Rex and I were the representatives,” freshman Joseph Ogunyemi said.
In the end Moser House came out with a victory, as well as the girls’ house, Cooper, since the two girls and two boys threw their pumpkin the furthest, each followed through with their goal to win. While other houses had another goal, to have fun and do their best.
“I don’t think anyone really chose, it was more of me and Alexis noticing that there weren’t any nominees for Regester, so we just instantly thought, why not us, it would be fun and exciting,” Willerson said.
