This new addition to the baseball facility would allow the team to host night games and doubleheaders, which are currently difficult or impossible to schedule. Every other team in the region has lights, giving them more flexibility when arranging games. Furthermore, instead of having a doubleheader, other schools must travel twice a week to accommodate games.
Night games would also increase attendance from students, families and other community members who are unavailable during the school day, creating a better atmosphere and more support for the team. This would also eliminate the possibility of students having to miss class time during school hours.
“It would allow us to play night games, which would drive up the attendance because sometimes during the day people have things to do and places to be,” head baseball coach Matt Larry said.
Without lights, practices are often rushed and sometimes shortened, which reduces the quality of their preparation. With a lit field, coaches are granted the ability to run full, productive practices without sacrificing academics, making sure that the players have enough time to develop their skills, work on conditioning and prepare safely for games. Larry commented that having lights would allow the team to be able get the full practice in every day instead of having to rush everyone straight from school to get practice started.
During the first few months of the baseball season, the sun sets early, making it difficult to practice or play games after school. This is especially challenging in late winter and early spring when daylight ends before teams can fully warm up and complete practice. Lights would solve this problem by providing consistent visibility regardless of the time of year. This would improve player safety, prevent canceled or shortened practices and allow the team to maintain a consistent schedule as the season begins.
Adding lights to the baseball field would also reflect positivity on the school as a whole. Modern athletic facilities help showcase the school’s commitment to its students, and it becomes more appealing to visiting teams, families and potential future students. Schools with modern and up-to-date facilities are often viewed as more competitive and supportive of student activities and athletics.
