Review of Nathan Sykes’ “Kiss Me Quick”

Review of Nathan Sykes Kiss Me Quick

As much as people love the 90s, one thing that everyone can agree on is that boy bands can and should stay in the 90s.

The Wanted was a boy band that rode up alongside One Direction and one of its members, Nathan Sykes, decided to break off on his own and his debut a single as a solo artist. His song, ”Kiss Me Quick”, was less than impressive.

In the age of electronic dance music with lyrics that makes absolutely no sense, it’s good to hear a song with 90s/early 2000s R&B influences and lyrics that makes little sense.” Kiss Me Quick” is a light-hearted song, the kind of song that is easily enjoyed and easily digested.

It’s fun, it’s catchy and it isn’t meant to be taken seriously.

In the 3 minute-long song, Nathan Sykes sings about how a girl should drop the act and come kiss him right away. There is a punchline among these lines, which I truly hope is intentional; Nathan confessed in an interview that this song was about how bad he is at flirting. It clearly and obviously shows throughout the song.

One thing I do admit is that his vocal delivery is impressive: ”I’m down/ Nobody’s looking right now/ Ain’t no time for messing around/ But it won’t take a minute/ Baby come kiss me quick,” Nathan belts out for the chorus, showing off his falsetto.

“Kiss Me Quick” has this old school feel to it that brings up a little nostalgia through its production. From the first second of the song through the last, the star of the song is the trumpet. It is what gives this song a classy touch, as shown most clearly in the intro and the middle eight. It grabs your attention from the first few moments of the song, as well as the beginning of the middle eight as it moves on to Nathan demanding a girl to put her lips, hands and her whole body on his face. He seems to be channelling his inner Justin Timberlake vocally, which is very interesting.

Nathan Sykes’ debut single” Kiss Me Quick” is not bad, but it is definitely underwhelming and forgettable. It’s done its job well as a light hearted song that you can just dance to when you have nothing else to do.

However, Nathan Sykes definitely has potential, as shown in his collaboration with his ex-girlfriend Ariana Grande, but he has to step his game up if he wants to escape mediocrity and be taken seriously as a solo artist
