The Beckoning, named for and created by Cooper head of house Rebecca Nolin, known as Coach Becks, is a new Halloween contest that allowed students and faculty to jump-scare and surprise friends while having a good laugh. To enter this contest, participants film a short video scaring somebody and submit it to Coach Becks. After the submission deadline, the heads of house and Coach Becks watch all the videos and vote on the scariest video, and the winners received a gift card. During the jumps and screams, Sophomore Nakami Karuthiru and other girls from Cooper House participated in this fun Halloween spirit game, having a lot of fun while staying within the rules. This was a fun way for the girls to get to know each other and for students to have a good laugh.
“I was scared inside Cooper House, my head of house told me the homecoming shirts were in, and I went to see, and little did I know one of my friends was hiding in a big box. I went to see the shirts, she jumped out and scared me.” Karuthiru said.
The heads of houses received videos and put them all together to make a montage of scares, and the best scare is going to win a gift card of their choice. The two winners of this contest were Thomas Fitzgareld and Izzy Martinez. They won because they had very good scares, and they scared faculty members Terar Everhart and Elizabeth Bruce. When you scare a faculty member, you can earn more points to get you ahead in the contest. These two people won the competition with laughter and fright. The Beckoning Contest is a competition not just confined to campus. The community can scare people anywhere. Sophomore Clara Holter and several others claim the tunnel was the best place to be scared on campus.
“I think the best place to scare somebody is probably the tunnel between the Huffman and the Chapel because you can hide at the other side without anyone seeing you, and when a person walks through the other side, you can jump out at them and scare them. That’s why I think the best place to scare is the tunnel,” Holter said.
Although Holter believes the Huffman tunnel is the best place to be scared, junior George Loveless thinks otherwise.
“Even though I was the one getting scared, I think the best place to scare is the student center because there are a lot of places to hide and it’s very loud, so you wouldn’t expect it coming,” Loveless said.
