15 students and three chaperones from Student Publications went to New York on Tuesday, March 15, for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association conference.

On Wednesday, March 16, the students went to see a live taping of Dr. Oz. The group got to see Jennifer Garner and learn about the dangers of ear stapling. Later that afternoon, the students attended a class at Columbia and that night saw School of Rock on Broadway.

On Thursday, March 17, the students went behind the scenes to see a taping of the Today’s Show and to have a quick chat with Matt Lauer. The students had a full day of classes and met with yearbook consultant Paul Ender. Thursday night provided free time for the students to explore and shop around Times Square.

“Matt Lauer was probably my favorite part of the NYC trip because he was so personal and so sweet and even hopped in our picture,” freshman Anabelle Braden said.

On Friday, March 18, the students attended a few classes, and then went to shop on Fifth Avenue. Later that night, the group enjoyed dinner at Tavern on the Green and saw Hamilton on Broadway.

“Going to New York was a new experience, and the classes at Columbia were very helpful,” senior Ethan Pender said. “We took a lot of new tips and information that will help our program this year and moving forward.”

“I’m so glad I got to be a part of this conference because not only was it a great opportunity to learn more about yearbook, but I got to work together with my fellow staffers on this yearbook,” sophomore Claire Anderson said. “Even though we didn’t compete for a crown this year, I’m confident the 2016-2017 Jaberwokk staff will be leaving NYC with a crown!”
