This is a new year, full of new people and a new track and field… well almost. The track within Chris Hunter Stadium is one of the focus points of our great campus, and it is currently receiving the make over of a lifetime.

“The track was originally supposed to be finished by August 28th,” said Eddie Guth, our new Director of Athletics.

It’s safe to say that our school had the great intention of getting the track and field completed as soon as possible, but weather conditions and unexpected problems extended the expected completion date.

“They had the track area ready to grade multiple times, but again, weather stopped that,” said Guth, “One of the biggest issues that was not predicted was the drainage problem once the track curb was put up. When the curb was put up, we lost drainage on the field.”

The asphalt was poured on the 14th and 15th of Sept. Mr. Guth believes the asphalt will take around 30 days to dry and to cure before the track surface can poured.

There have been some issues with rubber crumbs coming off of the turf, too.

“Rubber crumbs are typical of a turf field,” said Guth. “[They give the field] cushion, just a necessary evil, but the track and field will get very warm.”

However, Darlington can now host track high school meets.

“We will now be able to host track high school meets here at Darlington since we meet the GHSA recommended number of lanes,” said Guth. “We want to use it as much as we can, and now we will always have a nice practice spot.”

The expected finish date is sometime around November.
