Around the school, students are seen wearing letterman, Barbour and other stylish jackets. During the winter, jackets show personality, school pride, comfort and keep students warm.
Together, they make our school halls look fun and stylish. For the letterman jacket, after earning a varsity letter, athletes have the opportunity to earn the “D” sewn onto a jacket, showing off their achievements as they roam campus.
“To me, a letterman is appealing because not only can you represent your school with pride, but it’s also the uniqueness of displaying personal achievements on the sleeves of your extracurriculars/sports,” senior Henry Ledbetter said.
Ledbetter is known for wearing his jacket around school with his skinny pants. While members of the community view this stylistic choice as troublesome, senior Sidney Rush share his enthusiasm for the jacket itself.
“I love the letterman jacket because I always wanted one, and I think it’s cool how you get to show off all of your achievements. I have all of my basketball and volleyball patches on there,” Rush said.
The letterman is a jacket that will always be there to remind you of your high school years and something you can treasure for the rest of your life.
“I chose to wear and get a letterman jacket because it is a timeless layering piece that you can wear as a memento in the future,” Ledbetter said.
Although the letterman makes you look stylish and carries many memories, it still keeps you warm through the school day.
“I have had my letter jacket since the spring of my freshman year. I got the jacket when the company came to school. I like to wear my letterman to school when it gets really cold and to any school-related things,” Rush said.
Another jacket you might find around the school is the Barbour jacket. Students like it because they can wear it for casual activities as well as fancy dinners. These jackets are available in boutiques around the South. They are very popular and are a great gift for students.
“It was a gift from my dad two years ago,” senior Crawford Pettit said. “I got the jacket mainly because it was a versatile jacket that can be worn any time. My dad bought it for me in Atlanta, but when I was in Virginia when first saw it, and that’s where I found the right size.”
The Barbour is a jacket that is coated with wax like substance to make it waterproof and it gives a good feel to the jacket.
“Right about the wintertime, to keep warmth you can wear it in many ways as it is very versatile,” Pettit said. “Such as a warm jacket, a raincoat and fits in with casual and nice occasions. I like to wear it whenever it is cold. The jacket is unique because even with the jacket by itself, I have the vest you can zip in inside it for extra warmth, and a hoodie you can button on the top if it’s raining, I am completely covered.”
Students have many different types of fashion, whether if it’s the letterman or a Barbour make students just like warm, simple jackets that make them warm.
“The jacket is a Helly Hansen brand. The design is black and gray and the inside is white and cream, like the outside witch is also waterproof,” freshman Madison Paxton said.
The Helly Hansen jackets are similar to the Barbour jacket, which are waterproof and can be worn for more formal occasions.
“My jacket is warm and not too big. I have had my jackets for a little while, and I think it’s really cute too.” Paxton said.
