Lessons and Carols was set on Sunday, Dec. 14, in Morris Chapel. It was the 42nd annual service and was led mostly by upper school students, while students from 4th and 5th grade had the opportunity to join in and perform the songs they had worked on. Lessons and Carols is one of the longest standing Darlington traditions, which is a special event that brings together students, faculty, families, and friends to celebrate the joy of Christmas through music and scripture.
This yearly service is hosted and put on by our “Y” Cabinet, which the “Y” Cabinet manages all of the school’s religious aspects. Many speakers, presidents, and lead roles on the “Y” Cabinet spoke, for example, seniors Gracie Cowan and Henry Ledbetter. During the service, the story of the birth of Christ was told. Following the ceremony, an annual tradition of the Tree being lit and Christmas Carols being sung with candles in hand.
The service tells the timeless story of the birth of Christ through a series of readings, or “lessons” that trace the journey from prophecy to the manger in Bethlehem. Between each reading, music fills the space, allowing the message of hope, peace, and joy to be expressed not only through words but through song.
This years service featured beautiful performances by our choir, band and Lower School chorus group. The Upper School choir led the congregation with powerful and reflective carols, while the band provided rich instrumental accompaniment that added depth and warmth through the service. The Lower School chorus delighted their audience with their joyful singing, reminding everyone of the wonder and innocence at the heart of the Christmas story.
Together, these performances created a moving experience that highlighted the talents of students across all grade levels. The combination of music and storytelling invited everyone present to pause, reflect, and prepare their hearts for the Christmas season.
Lessons and Carols is more than a concert; it’s a cherished tradition that unites our school community in faith, gratitude, and celebration. Through music and scripture, we are reminded of the true meaning of Christmas and the importance of coming together to share in its message of love and hope.
