Holiday menu items spread holiday cheer around campus

The holiday season is upon us, and with a change in weather and in spirit comes a change in restaurant menus. Around the first week of November each year, numerous spots release their holiday or winter menus, featuring new food and drink items for the season. Some of the most popular restaurants among students include Starbucks, Dunkin’, and Chick-fil-A for special holiday treats.

“I’ve been to Starbucks and Dunkin’,” sophomore Elle Howren said. “I like the Starbucks ones better than the Dunkin’ ones.”

Starbucks is a heavy favorite when it comes to both regular and holiday season drinks and treats, partially because it has one of the largest menus to choose from, with a whopping 11 drinks and food items. Nevertheless, Starbucks remains the frontrunner among the student body and other enjoyers. There are a few hidden gems like Chick-fil-a, which also boasts a sizeable, diverse menu that even appeals more to families and kids with more non-caffeinated options.

“Chick-fil-A has the peppermint milkshake,” junior Evie Shropshire said.”It’s really good.”

Another factor when considering the popularity of different holiday menus is how long the items have been available. Chick-fil-a’s fan favorite peppermint milkshake turns 15 this year, while Starbucks’ original holiday menu item, the eggnog latte, was first introduced in 1984.  However, a new addition can have the same effect as an old-time favorite, both drawing in customers and sparking curiosity.

“I think it’s better for a company or a restaurant to come out with more new items because the new items will attract new customers. If you just keep the same items, people will get bored with what you have,” Howren said.

The fun aspect of the ever-evolving holiday menus with new additions each year is often positive. However, as senior Kalli Cleland comments, not all treats are well-received.

“Last year I tried some cranberry refresher that tasted like candles, and never again,” Cleland said.

The number of options on Starbucks’ menu allows something every customer will enjoy, even if they are not a fan of a certain drink or ingredient; there is also another item.

“The caramel brulee latte is too sweet for me, but I like the peppermint mocha. I get it every year,” junior Evie Daniel said.

Cleland said.

Like Cleland mentions, many customers enjoy the special treats for the taste but also for the holiday feel.

“I think it makes the season more festive and cheerful,” Howren said.
