While certain students receive a hand-me-down car while others receive brand new car bought by their parents, others decide to make the most of whatever car situation they are in. Generally students do not care what car they drive and just want one that will get them from place to place. However, a select few students take great pride in their vehicle’s appearance. Many cars in the Huffman parking lot have been recognized for their unique and suave aftermarket additions. These aftermarket choices vary from lifted suspension to additional light bars; every car has its own features.
“I drive a black 2015 Toyota Four Runner, and it has 35-inch tires, which are pretty big, and it has a roof rack. I also have some auxiliary lights,” junior Josiah Powers said. “I also have a subwoofer, and it is probably my favorite feature of my car because it enhances the bass, and it makes it really loud, and it is really fun to blast some music.”
Being able to drive a car also has some downsides because it can be expensive, and cars have problems or require high maintenance. There is also the price of gas, insurance, and maintenance, and that can be expensive for either the student or the parent.
“I drive a 2007 Tahoe, and it is what is called a Zeus Bronze coating color with a gloss finish. It also has black rims and black tires, and a brush guard to make it look like an absolute mammoth of a car. I like to call it the Chad for certain reasons,” senior Henry Ledbetter said. “I pay for my own gas, insurance, and maintenance, and it is very annoying. Two months ago, I had to take the car into the shop seven different times in two weeks because it is older than me and it was having problems.”
A benefit to having a car is being able to have more independence as a teenager. This comes with extra responsibilities but also gives you the ability to explore new places, participate in more activities, and make your own decisions.
“I think having a car gives me independence because it allows me to go to places I want to and I do not need to ask my parents or somebody else for a ride. I can just go get food whenever I want, and I do not have to wait on my parents,” junior Kameron Skonieczny said.
