Many students share similar opinions when it comes to balancing chocolate and fruity candies on Halloween night. While some stick to classics like Reese’s or M&M’s, others look forward to newer treats that rise in popularity each year.

From classic chocolate bars to trendy sour gummies, Halloween candy always sparks strong opinions about what’s worth trading and what’s better left in the bowl. Students shared their favorites and least favorites, revealing surprising shifts in candy popularity this year. While some old favorites are making a comeback, others are quickly losing their sweet spot.
“My favorite Halloween candy is definitely the bite-sized Twix; I’m not sure what it is, but I love them. Usually, I prefer non-chocolate candies, such as gummies. Specifically, Watermelon Sour-Patch Kids, I like to have on a Halloween night. I would say the most popular is probably Skittle bags,” junior Lance Carroll said.
While some students lean toward chocolatey favorites like Twix and Reese’s, others prefer the fruity and sour side of Halloween candy. Whether it’s Skittles or Sour Patch Kids, everyone seems to have their go-to treat when the night of trick-or-treating arrives.
“Reese’s are my absolute favorite candy for all year round,” sophomore Jacey Ward said. “Although I prefer, like on Halloween, non-chocolate candy, I just feel like it tastes better. On Halloween, I like to have Sour Patch Kids and Skittles. Chocolate tends to get gross and all melty by the end of the night. The most popular candy is M&M’s for sure. Every year, I see everyone eating them.”
“Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, they have a lot of peanut butter in the middle, and I love chocolate overall,” sophomore Tristan Leezer said. “I prefer a non-chocolate on Halloween, though, because I like gummies and Skittles, and that’s if I had to pick random candies, but my favorite candies are chocolate. I feel like every year there is a new popular candy, and this year it’s Nerds Gummy Clusters.”
“100 Grand and Snickers are my favorite Halloween candies to have because I prefer chocolate rather than non-chocolate,” Barksdale said. “I’m not a big fan of sugar, but if I had to pick a non-chocolate favorite, it would be Twizzlers since they aren’t as sweet. The most popular Halloween candy is the tiny bags of Skittles. Every year, I see them get passed out. When I go trick or treating, the least favorite has to be Almond Joy because it always gets left in the bowl.”
