Trump’s First Address to Congress

On Feb. 28, 2017, Donald Trump made his first address to a joint session of Congress. Many on both sides of the aisle were worried about what this speech would bring; however, Trump stayed on topic and on script throughout the night. Throughout his speech, Trump called for unity across partisan lines. He said that if Congress lets the wellbeing of the American people be their guide, they will be successful.

Here are a couple of basic points outlined.

Trump began by outlining what he has already done in his first few weeks and the campaign promises he has kept. This list included:

-Many companies are now staying in the U.S. and investing money into the American economy and providing more jobs to the American people.

-The stock market is at a record-breaking high.

-Trump declined a new F35 plane, so he claims that taxes will decrease since that isn’t being built.

-Trump has placed a hiring freeze on all nonessential government employees.

-Trump has began to “drain the swamp” with a five year ban on lobbying within the executive branch.

-Trump is reducing “job-crushing” regulations. In fact, for every new regulation, two old regulations must be eliminated.

-The Dakota Access and Keystone Pipelines are being made, which will create jobs and increase oil.

-The United States has left the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

-Trump is working with Justin Trudeau to help women entrepreneurs.

-Many departments are working together to get rid of cartels and violence within the U.S.

-Trump is increasing border security and immigration enforcement. He claims this will raise wages, help the unemployed and the country will be safer.

Then, Trump started with his future plans.

Immigration Enforcement-Trump wants to increase border security with the wall and to increase vetting of all immigrants and refugees. Trump claimed that since 9/11, the majority of terror attacks have been executed by immigrants.

Supreme Court Pick-Trump asks the Senate to quickly confirm his pick, Neil Gorsuch.

Infrastructure-Trump promised to put money into improving U.S. infrastructure (which he claims hasn’t been done like he will since Eisenhower). He said that it will have only two requirements: By Americans and Hires Americans.

Foreign Policy-Trump wants to put more money in the U.S. Military. He also said that he has plans to protect American allies, which is something that many were worried about. He said he plans to stay in NATO and that since he has become president, the “money has come pouring in” from NATO countries.

Obamacare-Trump called for Congress to repeal and replace Obamacare so that it was cheaper and offered more coverage. Here, Trump called for reform across the aisle to fix the “imploding Obamacare disaster.”

Lastly, he talked about American aspirations and innovations. He said we must look into the future and finished by saying,

“From now on, America will be empowered by our aspirations, not burdened by our fears, inspired by the future, not bound by the failures of the past and guided by our vision, not blinded by our doubts.”
