Review of Mary Lambert’s “Secrets”

Album Artwork for Mary Lambert’s album, “Heart on my Sleeve”.

“Secrets” by Mary Lambert effortlessly condenses seven years of teenagedom into three minutes and fifty three seconds – without skipping a beat.

Beginning with an inviting instrumental, this pop record uses personal wording to challenge the ancient regime of our time. Mary Lambert casts aside all worries of societal viewing and encourages us all to do the same. A “come and join me” attitude drives the lyrical and rhythmic standing.

This is one of those rare songs that tackles and important issue, like the value that is placed on us all by our, as she puts it, “Secrets”. This is done in an almost comical way, but proves to be subtly powerful because the messaging will not leave your mind until you’re tired of singing along and force it out.

“Secrets” calls for us to challenge how we think and re-evaluate the elevated pressure we, sometimes unknowingly, place upon ourselves and others while feeling like a good hug all in the same chorus.
