Softball senior night on September 29 was a celebration of leadership, energy, and the impact of the team’s only senior, Moanna Maynard. Her presence throughout the year has helped shape the tone of the team both during practices and in high-pressure moments. Fellow softball players have previously said that they will miss the profound impact Moana has made and the positive influence that she has always had on the team. Sophomore student Allie Reynolds has gotten to know her well over the season and reflected on what it’s meant to have just one senior leading the team.
“She’s definitely always been there for all of us whenever we were down on the game or anything. She would always pick the team up,” Reynolds said.
This season has also been memorable for the softball players who are stepping into new responsibilities. Reynolds explained that this year stood out because Maynard took on a new role in the lineup: pitching as well as switching around positions and staying engaged in every play. The impact of leadership did not stop with everyday moments; she consistently inspired her fellow teammates with her actions. Junior Finley Pilgrim describes how Maynard set the tone for the entire team.
“She always shows up ready to play and with good energy, and it brings everyone else on the team up.” Pilgrim said.
That kind of consistency helped build confidence and connection among the younger players. Senior night itself served as a reminder of the standard Maynard set throughout the year. Pilgrim recalled a moment from the game that stood out to her as a turning point.
“In the game on Monday, it was senior night, and she really hustled and put all of her effort into everything she did,” Pilgrim said.
