The Senior Athletic Breakfast was held on May 9 in the Dodd Dining Hall to celebrate the senior athletes’ hard work and determination throughout their time at Darlington. The senior athletes gathered together to have one last celebration before they leave for college. After several years of dedication to the sport they have played, they got to look back and remember all of the fun memories they made with coaches and friends throughout their time here. Senior Clara Alonso-Guelbenzu has played on the girls varsity soccer team and also was on the girls JV volleyball team.
“I am excited to be around all my friends and enjoy breakfast with them for one of the last times ever,” Alonso-Guelbenzu said.
Members from both the soccer and track teams appreciated the chance to celebrate their time together with their fellow athletes during the event. Senior Bo Brooks was on the track and field team for all of his high school career.
“I have done track and field all four years of high school. Many of my friends attending are the throwers on the team as well as almost the entire track team,” Brooks said.
The friendships made over the years were a common theme expressed by the athletes throughout their comments.
‘’I’m most excited to spend time with my friends that I’ve made through the sport I love,” senior and soccer player Lily Ivester said.
The event also gave the athletes an opportunity for a personal reflection on their experiences and how it has helped them in their personal growth over the past few years.
“Track and field truly shaped me as an athlete but also as a person, it taught me concentration and grit,” Brooks said.
Through these demanding and intense sports, the athletes have learned discipline that will help them throughout their lives.
“I play soccer and have played for all 4 years of high school but have been playing since I was young, which has been a lot of time and dedication,” Ivester said.
Both Ivester and Alonso-Guelbenzu are senior soccer players that have become good friends while playing soccer. Throughout these sports many long lasting friendships were made.
“I do have friends attending, some of my soccer teammates, Lily [Ivester] and Lillian [Baggett], are going along with others,” Alonso-Guelbenzu said. “I think the senior breakfast is a great way to celebrate all athletes from Darlington one last time.”
