On Monday, Feb. 24, the coaches of the winter sports handed out their awards during assembly. The sports that handed out awards were boys and girls basketball, wrestling, and swim. The coaches gave speeches about each athlete before they received the awards, they were detailed on how each student athlete was essential to each of the teams. Eddie Ye and Caroline Jordan both received awards at the assembly. Both are seniors and this was their last year to receive awards as Darlington athletes. Ye tells us in detail how basketball has impacted ands changed his life for the better.
“Basketball has taught me resilience and hard work. It’s not just a sport, but a way of life that has shaped my mindset on and off the court,” Ye said. “Most importantly, it has introduced me to friendships and experiences I wouldn’t have otherwise.”
Jordan has been doing basketball since she was eleven, she shares how over the years basketball has made an impact on her life now as a senior.
“This sport has made me grow more as a person,” Jordan said. “It has helped me learn how to communicate and work together with other people.”
Ye has learned many things from being a teammate and being on the basketball team.
“Basketball taught me the significance of communication and unselfishness,” Ye said. “Being a good teammate means supporting teammates no matter win or lose, celebrating teammates’ success, and picking up each other’s mistakes.”
Jordan shares how throughout her years as a basketball player at Darlington this sport connects her to the rest of her teammates.
“We spend a lot of time together as a team with our season being so long,” Jordan said. “I believe that this helps to connect me to the rest of my teammates.”
Ye shares a deep connection to his teammates and he now shares with us what aspect connects him to his teammates to achieve that connection.
“Pushing each other in practice and celebrating every point my teammates make in the games is what connects me to the rest of the team,” Ye said. “Basketball truly creates a family atmosphere where we really trust and rely on each other.”
Jordan believes that basketball has made her a better person. She shares how basketball has changed her.
“Basketball has made me a better teammate because the sport has taught me to be encouraging and supportive to everyone on the team,” Jordan said.
