The boys’ varsity baseball team recently had their season opener scrimmage against Woodland High School At Woodland. They unfortunately fell short but fought hard losing 17-14. This game was a scrimmage so it does not affect the baseball team’s record or standings. The scrimmage had slightly different rules than a normal game. It had certain runners on bases before the Innings started to simulate in-game scenarios to prepare the team for situations later in the season.
Sophomore varsity player Cooper Norris discusses the loss and the exciting season expectations. He also elaborates on the outcome of the scrimmage.
“It was a tough game, hard-fought loss, you know we left out blood, sweat and tears on there on the baseball field,” Norris said. “We played good, came up a little short unfortunately, but it was just a scrimmage game to get back into the swing of things, and it was a fun game. Coming off that loss will motivate us because, man, I hate to lose more than I like to win. Coach Groves told me that quote and it made me dig deep into my thoughts to help me not lose in the future.”
Freshman Knox Merritt talks about the preparation that the baseball team had to go through to get ready for the season opener against Woodland. This is his first season with the team so he was able to learn how the team goes about preparing.
“The game had an unfortunate outcome, but it was a good experience because we got Chick-fil-A and I got to experience my first high school game. We played well, but we could have done better. It was a scrimmage game that wasn’t exactly a normal baseball game.” Merritt said.
Merritt continued speaking about both the scrimmage and practices, which can be a step up from middle school that takes time to adjust to.
“We went over our infield and outfield techniques, and then just had normal practices the weeks before. I enjoyed learning how to prepare for games and different teams with my teammates and coaches.” Merritt said.
During the long and intense season, athletes often require assistance from their teammates to motivate them and hold each other accountable to do their best. Having team chemistry to make sure everyone does the best of their abilities is beneficial to any sports team.
“Thomas Hargett, my good buddy, is a grinder man and he is a good teammate who knows how to get the boys ready to play,” Norris said. “He is a good citizen who can really play some ball.”
Norris spoke about the bond he had with one of his friends, testifying for the strong connection that are made on field and are crucial to having a successful season run. Merritt confirms this idea.
“My teammates also help me play my best by honestly just being there with me at practices and games. We all try are best to build the best team we possibly can.”
