The high school cheer competition team has prepared for weeks just for this very moment. On Friday, Nov. 15, the team will travel to Macon, Georgia to compete for the spot of number one in the state. Senior captain Alexa Segura and freshman Ari Waters share their different perspectives of the team. Segura has been doing competition cheer for three years and she now shares what makes her keep returning to the sport.
“Definitely the bond that I feel like I have with my team, it’s definitely a tight bond. Just the skills that we learn, you need to learn how to adapt to different situations and it helps with athleticism,” Segura said. “I think cheer is such a special sport because you know not a lot of people consider it a sport, and so for me I like to prove people wrong and say that this is a sport. I just truly love doing it.”
When asked what the difference is between being top of the lower school as an 8th grader to someone who is having to learn as a freshman, Waters shares her opinion.
“For when you’re an eighth grader, you don’t have to think about what you’re doing because everyone just kind of follows what you’re doing,” Waters said. “However, being a freshman in high school, you have to learn everyday what you need to do differently.”
Both teammates were asked how they think the team will do in state and if they are confident their routine will take them all the way. Segura shares some details about how she thinks their team will do.
“I am definitely confident in our routine, these past few practices have been great, and for me I really hope we can get third in the state, which is what we are going for,” Segura said. “I know we are going to do well, we have had so many challenges come our way and I think that has only pushed us to be stronger and has made us work harder as a team.”
This is Waters’ perspective of how she thinks the team will do.
“I think we will do really well because the routine has gotten us very far with everything, so I just think we need to go a little bit farther till Friday and we are good,” Waters said.
Segura shares an enlightening response when she was asked about her feelings approaching the championship as a senior.
“I’m a little bit sad because for me, going to state was something I have always dreamed of. You know, going for the first time last year, I did cry going off the mat and so I think this time it is going to be really hard to walk away from a sport that I have done for ten years,” Segura said. “I really am just going to miss the sport and I am really excited to do well with the team.“
