Following their successful campaign to publicize black culture with a collection of events based on MLK day, the Black Student Union at Darlington is looking forward to an exciting second semester.
“We’re trying to increase campus-wide social awareness and cultural inclusivity, while also building a safe place for Black Students,” Senior Nicolas Ntayagabiri said.
Many people misunderstand the BSU and what it really is. A common misconception among students here at Darlington is that the BSU is only for black students. However, in reality, it is different.
“The BSU welcomes students of all ethical and cultural backgrounds. We want everyone to be involved in this project because everyone can benefit from it in various ways,” Ntayagabiri said.
Last semester, the BSU spent time planning events to achieve their set goals. This semester, their goal is to effectuate their projects. An event that is coming soon will be at their gallery on the 14th of February.
“To start off Black History Month, we’ll have a gallery. The pieces featured will be done by students in the BSU, and they will symbolize Black empowerment and culture and ultimately help students acknowledge the diversity at this school,” Ntayagabiri said.
The student body should prepare for a handful of BSU events. With Afrobeat meets and many more, the BSU is still accepting new members, so if students want to join, they should approach a member or teacher affiliated with the BSU.
“Everyone is welcome to join this exciting project, 2024 will be big for the BSU, and we need your help,” Ntayagabiri said.
