Call Me by Your Name Review
Call Me by Your Name tells the story 17-year-old Elio, who lives in a small Italian village. Every summer, a doctoral student comes to live with he and his family to intern for Elio’s father. Throughout the summer, Elio and Oliver, this year’s student, fall in love. It is based off of a book of the same name.
As a major fan of the book, I was a little worried that the movie could convey Elio’s innocence and fear toward his feelings, but the movie does a fantastic job of following the book and keeping its tone.
Though this is a love story, it is first and foremost a coming of age story. Call Me by Your Name begins with Elio being insecure, scared and unaware, but by the end, Elio is more comfortable with himself. The movie shows how both Elio and Oliver are afraid of their feelings, especially of acting on them, but soon their desire for each other cannot be denied. The fluff and tenderness of their feelings is obvious throughout the entirety of the movie.
This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. The honesty and tenderness that is palpable throughout the entirety of the movie is what makes the movie. Their love story is experienced in a bubble, in stolen moments, but those around them can feel it too. I would give this movie a 5/5.
