The six houses competed in Christmas Karaoke for the first point of RUMPUS. Senior and a leader in Moser, Charlie Patel, freshman in Summerbell, Whit Watters, and junior in Regester Moana Maynard talk about participating in the fun Christmas tradition. Students are tasked with singing a random Christmas song assigned by the faculty. This tradition is important because it is the first point for RUMPUS which will be held in January. It simultaneously puts people into the holiday spirit while kicking off Darlington’s coveted house competition.
“This event puts us into the spirit for RUMPUS,” Maynard said.
This event is a popular tradition and as the first event, it brings everyone out for Christmas cheer and is the first spark of house-wide unity. All houses are tasked with assigning four people from their house to go up in front of all the students to sing in the Student Center. This was a challenge for some because no one knew what song they were singing.
“It is a lot of fun, but I will say it was a little nerve-racking at first. Being told to step up there and sing was definitely a challenge,” Patel said. “This being the first event for RUMPUS makes it important to me and my Moser boys.”
When asked about having to sing in front of the whole student body, Patel gave a piece of his mind.
“Our song was bad, none of us knew the words, and we could not pronounce the main words in our song, so that was a challenge for us. It was not easy at all.”
The Whit Watters from Summerbell was questioned about his experience.
“Having to go sing in front of everyone was not easy at all, I had to put my big boy drawers on and go sing my heart out,” Watters said. “It was a great experience being able to sing with my Summerbell friends. Bo, Eli, and Thomas were fun to sing with. It was also hard because we didn’t know what we were going to have to sing.”
As the experience seemed scary, Watters was questioned about his motive for participation.
“I volunteered to do this for my house because I’m a leader and enjoy doing activities like this for my house.”
Maynard was asked a similar question.
“I did this because I want to be a leader and be as involved as I can in Regester House this year.”
