Rebecca Loebe visits Darlington
The million mile journey, as singer-songwriter Rebecca Loebe described, is one that she has fearlessly trotted day in and day out.
On Oct.1, 2014 Loebe visited Darlington Middle and Upper School’s Fine Arts Department and allowed students to peek inside what it takes to be a successful songwriter.
“It’s [writing] like a million mile journey between your mind and your hand,” Loebe said. “If you write something down on a sheet of paper, you are a writer.”
Mary Sessions, Assistant Director of Boarding Admission, and Loebe both grew up in Atlanta and met when they were teenagers through mutual friends.
“When we first met she was already writing her own music and playing in coffee houses and we kept in touch so I could support her and she has an email list that I subscribe to with a tour list and I saw she was playing at a private school in Atlanta and I emailed her about coming to Darlington and I passed the info to Mrs. Tunnell who made the magic happen. It worked out perfectly,” Sessions said.
Ladies Chorale member Ching Ching Zhao got to hear Loebe speak to her class about how she writes her songs.
“She shared how she writes songs and shared how and why she writes the way she does. She performed in a way that displayed the feelings of not only herself, but others as well. She touched me because she wrote real songs on real emotions,” Zhao said.
The visit was a great experience for all of Darlington.
“She makes me realize how much I want to prosper,” sophomore Palesa Molapo said.
Loebe is planning on finishing her tour and then taking a break to finish writing her songs for her next album.
“If anyone wants to follow her journey like I do,” Sessions said. “It is an amazing experience to have the chance to help her along her career.”
