La La Land: Believe the Hype
“La La Land” is not the best movie I’ve ever seen, but it is the best film I’ve seen in a while.
Premiering on Dec. 9, 2016 from the creative perspective of Damien Chazelle, “La La Land” has taken over life as we know it.
From the opening scene of the Golden Globes to recent SNL skits, La La Land has been the talk of the town for quite some time now. So, why all the hype?
Ann Hornaday, the Washington Post’s chief film critic, condensed my feelings toward the film perfectly in her full review, “The real star in “La La Land” is the movie itself, which pulses and glows like a living thing in its own right.”
The majority of the film’s plot is conventional (boy meets girl, boy and girl hate each other, and then oh wait…boy and girl love each other) and yet, I was found at the end of the film in a pool of my own tears. This speaks to the detailed crafting of each and every scene.
Scenes that would have only served as transitions in other films, were the highlight of this one.
As an homage to classic musicals, “La La Land” fills a void with thrilling sound.
As a showing of unmatched vibrancy and stunning color, “La La Land” soars above all competition.
The impact of this film stems from its lesson in the power of choice and its masterful presentation. There is not one without the other.
“La La Land” has won six Golden Globes and is currently up for twelve Academy Awards. I will be watching the Oscars live on February 26, cheering on the best film of the year.
The film is now showing at Rome Cinemas and the soundtrack can be found on Spotify.
