Upper school students prepared to start off the year 2025 with different resolutions for the new year. Some of the tops new years resolutions in America range from simply gaining healthier habits like going on a diet, exercising more, and losing weight, to saving money to buy something that will help them through the year. In a poll sent out to all of the students at the upper school, we asked them what their New Year’s resolutions were. The most common New Year’s resolution was studying more.
“I chose study because my grades can always be better, and I have some time on my hands that could be used for studying. Next year I will try to get even better grades,” sophomore Cooper Laliberte said.
“I wanted to study harder so I can get better grades, a job, and money, and when I get a bad grade I need retail therapy.” sophomore Sara Snider said. “I knew I was going to have resolutions this year, I probably won’t follow it though because I have a shopping addiction, but new year new me.”
Another popular resolution people came up with was saving their money, some people want to be able to calm their spending habits, avoiding buying things out of impulse and deciding wether they really need it or not.
“I tend to get money and spend it on things that I don’t really need to get in the long run, so saving it could do a lot for me in the future in terms of having more money than I used to.” Laliberte said.
Sometimes people save money to get to reach a certain goal, wether the goal be to buy something that they want, or they simply want to have enough money to gain some peace of mind. Other times people want to be healthier, losing weight and general exercise were another popular choice among students, around 52% of all students choosing this option in the poll.
“I want to be able to run farther during my next cross country season so I need to do more cardio than I was doing in December,” Laliberte said.
People don’t make New Year’s resolutions, and just see it as another year to get through. Most people in America do not set resolutions for themselves, either because they do not have any goals, or they just do not want to.
“I wasn’t going to have any until all my friends did, and now I have like seven.” Tesch said.
“Originally, I didn’t have any but those were the first few that came to my mind right after Christmas,” Laliberte said.
Even as the year begins, people already seem to have plans for 2026, planning ahead for the future and creating new challenges for themselves.
“Assuming next year I have gotten money, can run a 15 minute 5K, and again have lots of money, then I guess my New Year’s resolutions for next year would again, to get even better grades.” Laliberte said.
While people do often spend time making these resolutions for themselves, and are able to stick to it, other times people do not carry them out as much as they hope to.
“I think I’ll be able to follow them this year, once I’m done with this upcoming sports season I’ll be able to run more,” Laliberte said.
“I will probably try and follow through by getting five dollars from each person to get 3,000 dollars, which is my final goal,” Tesch said.
