Friday, Nov. 8 during office hours, day and dorm students from all houses competed in a Chicken Wire Art Competition. Each house was given a word, and the had to make a piece of art corresponding to that word. Neville house won the competition, with the word “community”. Freshman Andrew Parsa, sophomore Lance Carroll and junior Jasper Stepp all describe their experiences at house events and the Chicken Wire Competition.
“House events are a fun competition between all of the houses,” Parsa said. “It is a way for you to show your support for your house, try to win and have fun with some of your house mates that you may have never met before.”
Carroll shares about the bond that Neville house has.
“House events mean a lot, because in Neville I feel like we are family,” Carroll said. “And the house events give us an opportunity to fight for each other and bond even more.”
Stepp talks about the leaders’ roles at house events.
“House events are very important, they are like a bonding events,” Stepp said. “As a leader trying to get day and dorm students together, it is very important.”
Parsa, Carroll and Stepp all agree that showing up to house events like the Chicken Wire Competition help grow the relationships between day and boarding students.
“Each of the events have to have certain amounts of day and dorm students,” Parsa said. ”So, if you’re in that event, then you’ll get paired with some day or dorm students that may not know, so you get to hang out with them for a little bit and maybe make some new friends.”
“I think when your having these house events and competitions, it’s easy to stick together,” Carroll said. “ Especially, when your competing against another house and you want your house to win.”
“In these events anyone is able to participate,” Stepp said. “Make sure to get your name out there and talk to leaders and get involved.”
Carroll praises the Neville Chicken Wire Team for their hard work during the competition.
“I thought the competition was going to be harder only having 15 minutes,” Carroll said. “But we all did our part, brainstormed in the beginning, got the work done and got the dub.”
Parsa has very high regards on Summerbell’s performance.
“I thought it was fun and I think Summerbell did a good job,” Parsa said. “Our word was honor, so we did a flower with a black background to show the bright flower shining out of the darkness.”
Carroll gives an explanation of the winning piece of art.
“We had community,” Carroll said. “So, we did a globe and then we did two sets of people holding hands.”
Stepp was also very happy with Moser’s “masterpiece”.
“Originally, we thought we were going to have to be super artistic to be successful at this event, but we figured that that wasn’t really the case because Moser made a masterpiece,” Stepp said. “Our word was wisdom, so we made a lightbulb, it was very interesting and fun.”
