On Feb. 4 at the Dress Rehearsal, Ian Kinney and Winston Gammon work together to form the character of Audrey II.

Winston Gammon is used to being under the lights on a Friday night at the Lakeside in a helmet and cleats, but this weekend this senior day student will be performing not on a field, but on the Rome City Auditorium stage in Darlington’s production of Little Shop of Horrors.

In his first ever Winter musical appearance, Winston’s contribution to the play will not be seen, but heard.

“I do have a little guest appearance in the beginning, but I am never seen as the voice of the plant,” Winston said.

This role of voicing the giant Venus flytrap, Audrey II, has been a challenge Winston is ready to take on.

“To mold your voice to the image because you can’t show facial expressions or use your arms to show what you’re trying to say or do is as hard, or I personally believe harder, than being on the stage,” Winston said.

Winston may be the voice, but there is another important half in bringing this character to life, Ian Kinney will do the puppet work inside the giant plant. The two have made a great team.

“Ian is incredibly smart and has memorized everything I say so he moves the plant to me,” Winston said.

Come out this weekend at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday to hear Winston and see the rest of the cast present Little Shop of Horrors.
